Das sage nicht oft, aber dieses Buch. hat mich komplett überrascht. Positiv. Ein schmales Buch, 179 Seiten, ein Buch, von dem ich dachte, dass ich es schnell mal runterlesen werde. Aber das funktionierte überhaupt nicht.

Die Sprache ist einfach, archaisch und am Anfang habe ich mich gefragt, warum die Übersetzer:in das alles nicht runder gemacht hat? Bis mir klar wurde, dass der Autor dieses Buch (er lebt seit 20 Jahren in der Schweiz) in Deutsch geschrieben hat. Einem Deutsch, dem man seine Muttersprache (das Arabische), auf eine ganz besondere Weise anmerkt. Hochkomplex und sehr poetisch und wie alle Sprachen, mit einem eigenen Kontext, Bildern und Bezügen ausgestattet.

Al Shahmani hat es auf erstaunliche Weise geschafft, das Arabisch in das Deutsche einzubetten. Das klingt etwas mystisch, doch genauso ging es mir mit der Handlung. Eine einfach erzählte Geschichte, die leidvoll und hoffnungsvoll zugleich ist. Eine Symbiose aus zwei Sichtweisen. Ich denke, dass es auch deshalb so gut gelingt, da viel von Al Shmanis Leben in diese Geschichte eingeflossen ist, die sehr stark an seine eigenen Erlebnisse – die Flucht aus dem Irak als Intellektueller in die Schweiz – enthält.
Doch es ist weniger die Geschichte, die er uns erzählt, die mich gefesselt hat, es ist die Art und Weise, wie er sie erzählt. Der Umgang mit der Sprache ...

I used the break between two book projects to paint a wall in my apartment.
And then another wall, and then I refreshed the paint on several other things in my apartment. Painting is so relaxing.

Now I'm thinking of fore edge painting. A fore-edge painting is a scene painted on the edges of book pages. There are two basic forms, including paintings on fanned edges and closed edges. For the first type, the book's leaves must be fanned, exposing the pages' edges for the picture to become visible. For the second closed type, the image is visible only while the book is closed.

The proof hardback copies of BIG LOVE are perfect to try it out. Maybe a green lawn and a football? Or my characters? Hm. Or I'm going crazy?

I have never read these books. I tried to watch the tv series - failed. But I love this covers. The smoothness of the colors, the warmth. The dreaminess (does this word even exist?) So I keep the books because of their covers.

I took this picture at an exhibition in an former granary near Potsdam. The wooden railing were for out safety, because there were holes everywhere. 40 artists represented their work.
But - The hole building was fare more interesting than the art.

This is sometimes a problem, when art is shown in such an environment. A lot of people only came to see, what was inside the old granary. And what could you possibly present as an artist to top this location.

Art needs a special environment. A place to shine. It was fun, to walk trough this exhibition. I liked the big mushrooms. Great light.
Is it a good way to present art? Hm ...

I love all things digital.

Layers and animation, creating and designing with digital instruments.
And - sure - I love eBooks. So easy to use, so handsome. At first, I was skeptical but when I discovered, that I can read everywhere, every time, I was hooked.

It makes so much sense to read eBooks. (Think of the paper crises at the moment)

Okay, I love printed books too. German books are often made with so much love and passion. Good paper, excellent cover design. I collect a few to remind me, that good book design matters.
✨
And this is also true for eBooks. Most of them are made with love and great sense for design. So a big thanks goes to @uwecarow for making a wonderful eBook out of my manuscript.

You instantly want to touch it, because this rings are carved out of wood.
Looks like a loud speaker ... Okay, more pictures would explain the concept of the room, but I like this detail.
